You’ve got your G2 and your friends want a ride. Before you load up the car, there are two passenger rules you need to know.
The first applies to every G2 driver. The second applies only if you’re 19 or under, and only late at night.

You can only carry as many people as your vehicle has working seatbelts. If your car has five seatbelts, the maximum is five people, including you.
Squeezing an extra friend into the back seat isn’t just a seatbelt ticket for a G2 driver. It’s a violation of your novice licence conditions.
Rule 2: Night Passenger Limits for Drivers 19 and Under
This is the rule that catches most new drivers off guard. It applies only if you are 19 or younger, and only between midnight and 5 a.m.

Two details matter here.
First, the limit counts passengers aged 19 or under. A 25-year-old passenger doesn’t count toward your limit.
Second, the limit ends when you turn 20, even if you’re still on your G2.
Real-life example: You’re 18 and got your G2 two months ago. At 11 p.m. you can drive four friends home, because the rule hasn’t kicked in yet. At 12:30 a.m., you can only have one friend aged 19 or under in the car.
The Exemptions Most G2 Drivers Don’t Know
The night passenger limits do not apply in two situations.
1. A Fully Licensed Driver Is in the Front Seat
If a fully licensed driver sits in the front passenger seat, the night limits are lifted.
2. Your Passengers Are Immediate Family
Immediate family members don’t count toward the limit. This includes a guardian and people related to you by blood, marriage, common-law relationship, or adoption, such as siblings.
Real-life example: You’re 17, three months into your G2, and picking up your two younger siblings at 1 a.m. That’s allowed, because they’re immediate family.

G1 drivers cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. at all. Many people assume that rule carries over to the G2, but it doesn’t.

Can a G1 Driver Drive with a G2 Driver?
No. A G2 driver cannot supervise a G1 driver.
To accompany a G1 driver, the person in the front passenger seat must:
- Hold a full G licence
- Have at least four years of driving experience
- Meet Ontario’s blood alcohol rules for accompanying drivers
A G2 holder doesn’t meet the first requirement, so a G1 driver can’t legally practise with them.
Real-life example: Your older brother has had his G2 for a year and offers to take you out for G1 practice. That drive isn’t allowed. You’d need a parent or friend with a full G and four years of experience instead.
