You’ve found the perfect spot on a busy Barrie street. Then you notice the fire hydrant just behind your bumper. Are you too close?
Parking distance rules are easy to forget, and getting them wrong can mean a ticket, a tow, or worse, blocking firefighters in an emergency. They’re also classic G1 test questions.
This guide explains how far to park from a fire hydrant in Ontario, plus the rules for stop signs, intersections, crosswalks, railway crossings and driveways. It covers the provincial rules in the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook and the extra rules in Barrie’s Traffic By-law.

Quick Answer: How Far Should You Park From a Fire Hydrant?
In Ontario, you must not park within 3 metres (about 10 feet) of a fire hydrant. That rule is in the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook, and the City of Barrie’s Traffic By-law 2020-107 sets the same 3-metre limit.
Why 3 metres? Firefighters need clear space to reach the hydrant and connect hoses quickly. A car parked too close can cost precious seconds in an emergency.
Ontario Parking Distance Rules at a Glance
According to the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook, do not park:
| Don’t park within | Distance |
| A fire hydrant | 3 metres |
| An intersection | 9 metres |
| An intersection with traffic lights | 15 metres |
| The nearest rail of a level railway crossing | 15 metres |
| A bridge | On it, or within 100 metres |
| A sidewalk, crosswalk, pedestrian crossing or road entrance | Anywhere that blocks it |
Signs can add stricter rules on top of these, so always read the signs where you park.

How Far Do You Park From a Stop Sign?
This is one of the most searched parking questions, and the honest answer surprises people. Neither the MTO Driver’s Handbook nor Barrie’s Traffic By-law sets a separate parking distance for stop signs.
In practice, stop signs sit at intersections, so the intersection rule applies: don’t park within 9 metres of an intersection (or 15 metres if it has traffic lights). That keeps the stop sign visible and gives drivers room to see cross traffic.
Some municipalities post their own “no parking” signs near stop signs, so watch for them.
Crosswalks and Pedestrian Crossovers
The MTO handbook says you must never park where you’d block a sidewalk, crosswalk or pedestrian crossing. In Barrie, the Traffic By-law adds:
- no parking within a designated pedestrian crossover (s.4.1.4);
- no parking within 9 metres of a pedestrian crossover where signs are posted (s.4.2);
- no stopping within 30 metres of a designated school crosswalk (s.4.10). That means you can’t even stop briefly to drop someone off.
Extra Parking Rules in Barrie
If you drive in Barrie, Traffic By-law 2020-107 adds rules that apply even when no sign is posted (s.4.1). Don’t park:
| Rule | Barrie by-law |
| On or over a sidewalk | s.4.1.1 |
| On a boulevard | s.4.1.2 |
| Within an intersection | s.4.1.3 |
| Within 3 m of a fire hydrant | s.4.1.5 |
| Within 15 m of a railway track on or beside the road | s.4.1.6 |
| Within 9 m of an intersection, unless a sign says otherwise | s.4.1.7 |
| In front of, or within 1.5 m of, a driveway or lane entrance | s.4.1.8 |
| On or within 100 m of a bridge | s.4.1.9 |
| In a way that obstructs traffic | s.4.1.10 |
| In front of a building’s main entrance or emergency exit | s.4.1.12 |
Where signs are posted, Barrie can also ban parking within 30 m of an intersection with traffic signals, within 20 m of a bus stop, or near tight curves (s.4.2). Large motor vehicles and trailers can’t be parked on residential streets except to make a delivery or provide a service (s.4.17).
Winter Overnight Parking in Barrie
The City of Barrie also has a separate overnight parking by-law. From December 1 to March 31, the city says on-street parking is not allowed overnight (12:01 to 7 a.m. on most streets, and 3 to 6 a.m. in the Downtown BIA), so snowplows can clear the roads. Check the city’s website for the current rules.
Other Simcoe County towns, including Innisfil, Bradford and Orillia, have their own by-laws, so check the local rules wherever you park.
Common Parking Questions
Can You Park Across the Street From a Fire Hydrant?
Usually, yes. The 3-metre rule is measured from the hydrant itself. On most streets, a car parked on the opposite side is well over 3 metres away. Always check for signs, though.
Can You Park on the Side of the Road?
Yes, where parking is allowed, as long as you aren’t blocking traffic and you follow the distance rules above. Outside towns, pull as far off the travelled lane as you safely can.
Can You Park on the Boulevard in Barrie?
No. The grass or paved strip between the sidewalk and the road is off-limits unless the city has approved parking there (s.4.1.2 and s.4.8).
Parking Distances on the G1 Test
Parking distances are classic G1 knowledge test questions. Expect questions like “How close to a fire hydrant may you park?” (3 metres) or “How far from an intersection must you park?” (9 metres, or 15 metres with traffic lights).
An easy way to remember the provincial numbers:
- 3 for hydrants;
- 9 for intersections;
- 15 for traffic lights and railway crossings;
- 100 for bridges.

Conclusion:

- 3 metres from a fire hydrant;
- 9 metres from an intersection;
- 15 metres from traffic lights and railway crossings;
- 100 metres from a bridge.
There’s no separate stop-sign distance, but the 9-metre intersection rule usually covers it. In Barrie, also stay 1.5 metres from driveways, off sidewalks and boulevards, and well clear of school crosswalks. And always read the signs where you park.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far do you have to park from a fire hydrant in Ontario?
In Ontario, you must not park within 3 metres of a fire hydrant. This rule comes from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook, and Barrie’s Traffic By-law sets the same 3-metre limit. It gives firefighters clear space to reach the hydrant.
How close can you park to a fire hydrant?
You can park no closer than 3 metres, or about 10 feet, to a fire hydrant in Ontario. Measure from the hydrant itself, and check for local signs that may set a larger no-parking area.
How far do you park from a stop sign in Ontario?
Ontario’s MTO Driver’s Handbook and Barrie’s Traffic By-law do not set a separate parking distance for stop signs. Because stop signs are at intersections, the rule not to park within 9 metres of an intersection usually applies.
How far do you park from an intersection in Ontario?
Do not park within 9 metres of an intersection in Ontario, or within 15 metres if the intersection is controlled by traffic lights. Local signs can extend this distance, so always check where you park.
Can you park across the street from a fire hydrant?
Usually, yes. The 3-metre rule is measured from the hydrant, and a car on the opposite side of most streets is more than 3 metres away. Always check for signs that prohibit parking in the area.
How far do you park from a driveway in Barrie?
Under Barrie’s Traffic By-law 2020-107, you must not park in front of or within 1.5 metres of the entrance to a private driveway or public lane. Where signs are posted, the distance can be 3 metres.
How far do you park from a railway crossing in Ontario?
Do not park within 15 metres of the nearest rail of a level railway crossing in Ontario. This keeps drivers’ view of the tracks clear and leaves room for vehicles to stop safely before the crossing.
